2nd Grade News for October 19-23, 2015
In Reading, we continued to retell stories by selecting the main events and using transition words such as next, then, after, and finally. Other reading strategies were on how to retell the stories read in class with expression by practicing it with our reading partners. The "BOOK CREATOR"app has been a great tool for this purpose.
Opinion Writing! We are exploring how to write clear statements of opinion using linking words, such as also, another, and because, to connect our ideas. Using relevant reasons to support our opinions have been a challenge this week.
Math: We just started Unit 4 this week! In this unit, addition and subtraction number stories are used as a vehicle for developing mental arithmetic skills. The unit ends with work on pencil-and-paper strategies as to develop the partial sums addition algorithm and to demonstrate using estimation to check if answers are reasonable.
Science: We had our first performance assessment in the studio (or the Maker Space) this week! Students experienced 4 different centers and they demonstrated their knowledge on Rocks and Minerals!
"Sand Sculptures"were made in the classrooms closing our "Pebbles, Sand, and Silt" Unit.
Extensions for Learning:
We’ve begun our new Social Studies about Communities and Geography. Please view this amazing video about Communities Around the World with your children to help them become familiar with this concept.
