Inspire. Challenge. Succeed.
Every Student... Every Heart... Every Mind... This week, Grade 4 has been practicing The Eagle Way, acting safely, giving respect, living responsibly and embracing challenges in the hallways, at recess, and during lunch.
Parents, take the time to ask your child in what ways he/she has been demonstrating The Eagle Way, both in and out of the classroom. Remember to review specific information about The Eagle Way found in the right sidebar of the blog.

Math. Students continue to learn about big numbers, estimation, and computation. It is important that your child practice his/her multiplication facts on a regular basis. Please review the Unit 5: Family Letter that provides important background information, vocabulary, do-anytime activities and homework support. Additional resources, including information about all Grade 4 math units, can be found under "Math Links" on the blog.
Students, watch the videos to help strengthen your understanding of both new and old mathematical concepts. Be sure to practice your multiplication facts at home every day!

Units of Study. This week, we launched our new unit in Social Studies: Trade and Economy. Students are learning about supply and demand and other market forces in order to create their own small business for our marketplace activity. Students have started working on their business plan.
Students, remember to follow the timeline and work efficiently in your groups!
Parents, please review the LATEST PARENT LETTER describing the marketplace activity:
Dear Families,
We are getting excited for our Grade 4 Marketplace on March 6, 7, and 8 (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday)! We would like to communicate a few important points to make this market a great (safe) learning experience for our students.
Before Market Day
Record Keeping: Students should be recording how much money is being spent on the “raw materials” going into making their product. This is important as students will later be asked to calculate their marketplace profit. Your child’s teacher may provide a recording form for this purpose.
Photographs: Students are required, as a part of their final slideshow, to include photographs of them making their marketplace products. Please help students by documenting their hard work.
On Market Day
Change: It is important students bring change on their market day. We suggest they bring approximately R$20.00 in small money.
Support: Some students are making products that require making products at the market, or products that require the use of machinery (e.g., a blender). These students will require support from a parent or other responsible adult during this time.
Thank you for all of your support!

Homework Expectations
Exploring our passions will teach us to be lifelong learners. With this in mind, we feel that time outside of the classroom is important in order to pursue our interests.
The following are our homework expectations for Grade 4:
The following are our homework expectations for Grade 4:

Grade 4, practice and develop a growth mindset! |
Parents, make your thinking visible at home! Learning to be flexible in our thinking allows us to reflect and make meaningful connections to the world around us; therefore, a culture of thinking for active, healthy and mindful living is created!
Support Your Child in Arguing Effectively and Persuasively... Help your child apply what he/she has learned about opinion writing! The next time you find yourselves arguing, teach your child to build a case and provide evidence for his/her position. Researchers found that when children argue effectively and persuasively, they learn to speak up and voice their opinion using evidence (Ron Ritchhart, 10 Parent Applications, Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education).
One School. One Community. One Graded.
O Sítio do Carroção... We have decided to postpone our Grade 4 field to o Sítio do Carroção until April 23, 24, 25. Since the yellow fever vaccination has been recommended for travel in areas of São Paulo state, we would like to allow parents who wish to have their child vaccinated prior to the trip to do so. For more information about yellow fever, please click here. We thank you for your understanding and support and we look forward to a fantastic trip in April!
April 23-25 is o Sítio do Carroção!
News from the Library... Your child can use Destiny Discover to access the online library resources at home! Students can open them directly on their devices once they've logged into Destiny Discover. Please ask Dr. Purcell if you have any questions about accessing the eBooks. Enjoy!
