Ms. Arcenas' Writers and Readers in Action!

Inspire. Challenge. Succeed.

Every Student... Every Heart... Every Mind... Grade 4 builds community by sharing in the writing and reading process.

Grade 4 uses specific tools to organize their writing. Writers plan their stories using the story arc, keeping their ideas meaningful and to the point.

Writer's Workshop

Grade 4's Writing Goals... Grade 4, we used what we know about the thinking routineCSI (Colour-Symbol-Image) to describe our writing goals. We made thoughtful and meaningful connections using metaphors to describe what we do well, as well as areas for growth in our writing.

Take a look at the completed CSI's of who we are as writers. What do you notice about the writing? Consider the following questions:
  • What connections could you make to the different CSI's?
  • What tools and/or strong words did we use to help make our goals clear and specific?

Grade 4 develops their writing further... Grade 4, during Writer's Workshop, your Writing App has been key to help support your writing, building your independence as a writer.

We have also been building our writing staminareviewingrevising and rewriting our scenes to develop more our ideas.

Grade 4 collaborated to create the elaboration and craft checklist to help develop our writing further.

Student Writing Examples... Grade 4, you have been conferring with your teachers to develop more your ideas. Take a look at the following examples of student writing and consider the following questions:
  • What evidence could you provide that shows that students have been reviewing and revising their writing?
  • What structures and tools could you identify that students have been using to add more to the heart of their stories? What makes you say that?
  • Which structures and tools have been most helpful in your writing? What makes you say that?

Reader's Workshop

Grade 4 grows their ideas and builds interpretations... Grade 4, we have been using our reading strategies to grow ideas and build interpretations about "The Tiger Rising" by Kate DiCamillo.

Grade 4 uses our class see-think-wonder of "The Tiger Rising" to help create their story timeline. Students paused to synthesize the information, describing the backstory that further explains the actions and feelings of the characters.

Grade 4 creates their story timeline... In reading partnerships, you determined the important events of Chapters 1-13 by using the following reading strategies:
  • Notice repeated details and patterns in the character's actions - What patterns and details are being repeated throughout the story?
  • Connect different parts of the book and think across the whole book - Without this event, the story would not make any sense
  • How do the characters new actions fit with or change your ideas - What events show character change?

Continue to use these strategies to grow ideas and build interpretations of the characters in your just right reading book!

Reading partnerships in ACTION... Grade 4, you collaborated with your reading partner, successfully embracing the challenges in your learning together!

One School. One Community. One Graded.

Grade 4 is STEAM! Get ready for a new STEAM Challenge...What's it Made of? We will have the opportunity to work in the High School Science Labs and collaborate with a partner to build different molecules

Review the instructions and BrainPop videos in the STEAM presentation to help guide your design process.
  • I wonder, in what ways could you connect STEAM to The Eagle Way?
  • Could you identify specific skills that will help us build our classroom community?
  • In what ways could your participation in STEAM help you grow as a learner?
