We will be back on time for students to go home on the bus / or car-pick at regular time. After school activities will run as normal on this day.
MATH:
Do-Anytime Activities
To work with your child on the concepts taught in this unit and in the previous unit, try these interesting and rewarding activities:
1. Review addition and subtraction facts. Make +,- Fact Triangles for facts that your child needs to practice.
2. Practice addition and subtraction fact extensions. For example: 6 + 7 = 13 13 - 7 = 6 60 + 70 = 130 23 - 7 = 16 600 + 700 = 1,300 83 - 7 = 76 3.
When your child adds or subtracts multidigit numbers, talk about the strategy that works best. Try not to impose the strategy that works best for you! Here are some problems to try:
267 + 743 =____ 794 - 554 =____ _____= 851 + 697 840 - 694 =____
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Student are currently presenting their migration story. We have been learning of some incredible stories of great-grandparents arriving in Brazil without knowing the language and starting very successful businesses still thriving today. Students have made many connections within the class recognizing that their classmates also arrived in São Paulo without knowing any Portuguese. As your child practices their presentation at home, please look over the scoring rubric linked here.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
In Language Arts, the third graders are finishing up their first Unit of Study in both reading and writing. Students are now accustomed to routines used in our workshops and are beginning to apply skills taught in our mini-lessons. Readers are becoming skilled in checking their comprehension by asking meaningful questions and to tackle more challenging words. In writing, students are creating story drafts and learning to tell their life stories using the voice of a storyteller through use of the writing process. Spelling and handwriting continue to be a part of our weekly routines. Looking forward, classes will soon turn their attention to reading and writing of non-fiction. We will be focused on using specific strategies for developing comprehension and creating of informational text. As a reminder, all third graders are asked to read and maintain a reading log at home to practice the skills they are learning in class.
