Week of May 16th to 20th

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

This week in 2nd Grade we will:

READING:  "Series Readers Become Experts on Author's Craft!" Students are busy reading in their books clubs! Readers are noticing ways in which authors use words to make even a simple, ordinary thing be extraordinary, and they wonder, "What does the author really mean?
Predicting how the story will go, using what you know about the other stories in the series, is another strategy being used by good readers in our reading clubs!

WRITING: 2nd graders are becoming awesome poets! Students are learning that poets, more than other writers, use metaphor, simile, and personification to convey meaning!
One of our goals in this unit is to help children relish and play with language, by seeking out honest, precise words, exploring and using figurative language with intention and purpose.

MATH: Unit 11: The highlights of this unit are: *Place Value notation for Ten-Thousands, *Addition Number Stories with Dollars and Cents, * Place the  Decimal Point correctly,* Multiples of Equal Groups, * Division Number Models, and * Multiplication/Division Fact Families.

SCIENCE:  INSECTS!!! Students will answer these essential questions for the remaining of this last trimester in 2nd grade:
  • How are all living things the same, and how are they different?
  • How do living organisms survive?
  • How do organisms interact with each other and their environment?
  • How do living organisms change and reproduce throughout their life cycles?
