Curriculum Highlights from Week 2!

Dear 2nd grade parents,

Here are the highlights from our curriculum in this second week of school. Each week we'll bring you a post about what we did in our classrooms as well as some suggestions for you to extend your child's learning at home!

Reading- We learned what to do before, during and after reading a book. Before reading, we read the title and the back cover, then check to see if it is "just right". During the reading we might make connections, predictions on what will happen next or take notes. After we read, we may retell, reflect, think about how we might use the information in the future or summarize!

Writing- Small moments for narrative writing was introduced! Small moments stories have one event, one time, one place and includes the student.

Math- This week we continued to review our math routines like working with a partner as well as concepts from 1st grade like telling time, counting on a number grid and grouping by tens with $1, $10, and $100.

Social Studies- We continued to develop a positive classroom community through team building activities and discussions about what makes a good friend.

Extensions for Learning

  • Practice telling time with your child to the half hour or make a schedule of their activities and include the times.
  • If you have a deck of cards at home, ask your child to teach you "Addition Top It". Reminder: take out the face cards!
  • If possible have children practice counting coins that you have in the house. It can be Brazilian or American coins.

Until Next Week...

The 2nd Grade Team
