Argument Writing & Debate: Humanities Update

Our Argument unit continues to grow in Humanities.

Students have written two argument essays already (chocolate milk debate & homework debate), and now they will use their writing skills and informational reading strategies to help them in their last argument essay.

March 18-21
Students have been put into small groups and will research with a partner into both sides of the argument to their topic. Students use books, Newsela and teacher-chosen videos to help build their arguments. This week is all about reading, and understanding both sides of the issue

March 25-29
Next week, students will learn the position they and their partner will take in their debate. They will be put into PROS or CONS partnerships. With their partner, students will research deeper into the issue and then each student will write their own argument essay using the evidence researched. During this week students will draft, edit and publish their essay.

April 1-5
The following week, students will prepare for their debate. Students will rehearse and memorize as much as possible for their debate at the end of the week.

Here are strategies students have learned during our Argument Unit. Students are now encouraged to use these strategies independently in their final essay & debate.
