Lower School Update - October 22, 2018

The Eagle’s Nest
Two classes were awarded the Golden G award today for demonstrating respect the past week. Congratulations to Ms.  England’s first grade class and Ms. Lomax’s third grade class!

Eagle Way Tip of the Week
One of the traits of people who are described as having integrity is that they apologize.  They admit their mistakes and try to make things better. Sincere apologies have 3 parts:
As part of our focus on integrity this month, we will be reviewing this with the students. Consider using it in your home as well.

Student-Led Conferences
This Wednesday we will have our second day of Student-Led Conferences for students in K5 to 5th grade. There are no classes on these days, students only attend during their scheduled conference time. There will be supervision on the playground for any families attending with more than one child.

Access Your Library Wherever You Are!
Two months ago, we shared the new LS Library website through the parent blogs. Have you had a chance to explore?  Please bookmark this site at home to access the wonderful resources we have available! Look for print and eBooks in our library catalog. Check out Tumblebooks to access over 1000 online books (including read-alongs) at all different levels. Look up country information in Culturegrams. Read encyclopedia articles and play learning games through World Book. Watch short educational cartoons, take quizzes, and play games through BrainPOP. Read encyclopedia articles in Portuguese through Britannica Escola.
AND access magazines and newspapers for yourself! If you haven't had a chance to look at Flipster yet, it's on the Teacher Resource page of the library site, and gives you free access to all issues of magazines like National Geographic, Real Simple, Rolling Stone, Yoga Journal, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Time, Photoshop Creative, Cooking Light, and many more.  You'll also find links for our subscriptions to The Economist and The New York Times.
Usernames and passwords for our resources are included on the site.
Follow our library Facebook page @gradedlibraries for updates and information. If you have questions, please contact Heather Purcell (heather.purcell@graded.br).
LS Reads
Families, we invite you to join us in our first whole-school read! Reading together provides quality time to bond, while showing your children that this is an enjoyable, lifelong activity. When we return from vacation in January, students will have opportunities to talk with others about the book.

You can access a digital copy of the book for FREE through Tumblebooks, or you can pre-order a hard copy (in English OR Portuguese) through Livro Facil. Visit Livro Facil before Nov. 1 if you'd like to pre-order your copy. The books will take about 30 days to arrive, so they will be here before the vacation. The English copy will be R$44,90. The Portuguese copy will be R$42,00.

Halloween Parade
Our annual Halloween Parade will take place on Thursday, November 1st. The students will parade around the field at 2:10. Parents are invited to watch the parade. Seating will be available in the stands for all parents. Immediately after the parade, students will return to their classrooms for a party where parents are welcome to join. We hope to see you there!
