Inspire. Challenge. Succeed.

Every Student... Every Heart... Every Mind... Happy holidays Grade 4! Take this time to relax, spend time with your family and friends, and also reflect on your growth as a learner. In what ways were you inspired, challenged and felt successful during your learning journey in Grade 4?

Literacy. Students should read at least 30 minutes a day. Parents, you can support your child by asking him/her questions about the reading, and/or reading aloud with them. Students can also continue their grammar development by reviewing and/or completing NoRedInk assignments. Furthermore, BrainPop and Khan Academy have a wealth of topics that students can choose from in order to build their listening and reading skills in various subject areas.

Use the strategies below to help guide your discussions about the fiction and nonfiction texts your child is reading.

Math. Students may continue their math learning over the holiday by reviewing the following videos related to concepts covered in Unit 8: Perimeter and Area. The Unit 8: Family Letter provides important background information, vocabulary, do-anytime activities and homework support. Additional resources, including information about all Grade 4 math units, can be found under "Math Links" on the blog.

Students, watch the videos to help strengthen your understanding of both new and old mathematical concepts. It is important that you continue to practice your multiplication facts and division strategies at home on a regular basis.

Students, apply the scientific method and use specific science vocabulary to push your thinking in your experiment conclusions and extensions.

Grade 4 explores how energy and matter interact to produce a transformation in the Lava Lamp performance assessment.

Grade 4 goes deeper into their understanding about how energy and matter interact to cause a transformation!

Practice a growth mindset... Grade 4, remember the importance of developing a growth mindset. Use this holiday as an opportunity to be open to new experiences so that you grow in your learning. Also, take the time to explore your passions and be inspired, challenged and find success in what drives you as a learner.

NEW news from the Library... Classes have been kicking off the vacation reading incentive program, the 2018 Reading World Cup. Review the linked document for materials to support your child during this exciting reading challenge! Students will turn their booklets in to their new homeroom teacher by August 15.

Students who have everything turned in will have the option of checking out books for the vacation (up to 10 books total per family) on their last library class of the year. If you are looking for suggestions to read together over the break, review the following list of books organized by category and approximate interest levels. In addition, the LS Library will be open every Monday from 9:00-11:00 and from 13:00-16:00 for you to come get new books if you're in town.

As always, your child can use Destiny Discover to access the online library resources at home! Students can open them directly on their devices once they've logged into Destiny Discover. Please ask Dr. Purcell if you have any questions about accessing the eBooks. Enjoy! Also, check out the following book recommendations!

Lastly, we've also been looking back on the school year, and invite you to read the annual report for the LS Library.

Happy Reading!
