Lower School Update - February 19, 2018

Welcome Back

We hope you had an enjoyable Carnaval break! It was exciting to see all the young faces back at Graded this morning. We are looking forward to many exciting events in the coming months.

After School Activities

The 2nd Semester Lower School After-School Activities begin this week and will end the week of May 28. Please review the email sent by Rob Switzer about procedures for picking up your child from activities. If children are not picked up after the activity (and do not take the bus) they will be brought to the Lower School Office for pick up. If your child is registered for an activity but will be absent, please contact the LS Office.  

The Eagle Way

Parents, we would like to share another tip with you that we have also shared with our teachers this week.  It’s called “Name, Verb, Paint” and it is a strategy for giving assertive and positive commands to your children.  When we use this strategy, we state our expectations in the positive (instead of “no” or “don’t”), we help children use mental pictures to guide their behavior, and we can pivot our attention from an emotional reaction to a focus on what we want.  Here is the process:

1. Establish eye contact and say the child’s NAME

2. Verbalize what you want to see happen.  Begin the sentence with a VERB

3. PAINT a picture of the expected behavior using gestures and visual cues

Instead of, “Don’t walk through the puddle” try, “Shannon, walk around the puddle (make a hand gesture to signal around)”.  Another example is “Pick up your legos” becomes, “Shannon, put your legos in the bin (demonstrate and/or point out the bin).”  Source:  Conscious Discipline

Family Movie Night

Mark your calendars, our next Family Movie Night will take place on Friday, March 9. Food and drinks will be sold at 5:00 pm, the movie will start at 6:00 pm on the field. As we will be sitting on the field, please bring a blanket to sit on and warm clothes if the weather is cool. Also, just a reminder that food and drink are not allowed on the field. An RSVP email will be sent out later for families to confirm attendance.
