Grade 4 Makes Their Thinking Visible in Ms. Arcenas' Class

Inspire. Challenge. Succeed.

Every Student... Every Heart... Every Mind... Wow Grade 4! During our first two weeks of school, we have had different opportunities to grow together in our learning journey, both academically and socially.

I wonder, in what ways have we demonstrated intellectual curiosity, perseverance, respect, integrity and kindness? How have our actions inspired, challenged and/or helped others to succeed?

Grade 4 shares their Holiday SPW

Grade 4 makes their thinking visible!

Describing what we learned during our holiday... Using the thinking routine, SPW (sentence-phrase-word), Grade 4 summarized what made our holidays so special.

I wonder, in what ways did your experiences inspirechallenge or help you to succeed, either personally or as a learner?

Inspirational, challenging, and most definitely, successful... Grade 4, remember to share your presentation with your family! As you review your Holiday SPW, ask your family to consider the following question:

I wonder, what writing toolsimagestext features and text structures could you see that helped you learn about his/her holiday?

Take a look at the following Holiday SPW presentations and ask yourself the same question, "What writing tools, images, text features and text structures could you see that helped you learn about their holiday?"

Set goals to achieve success in math!

Push your mathematical thinking further... Using the thinking routine, STW (see-think-wonder), reflect on your math learning and collaborate with your parents to create a new math goal.

Use what we are practicing in Writer's Workshop to carefully select evidence from your Unit 4 post-test to identify the following:
  • The skills you know well
  • The skills you have improved
  • Your new math goal and what makes it important to your growth in math

Review the following examples and use the writing tool, "Ways to Push Our Thinking", to help guide your writing:

Writing across content areas... Use our class example of opinion writing to guide your writing as you reflect on your math learning. Reflect on the following questions:
  • What do you notice about the writing that is similar? What makes you say that?
  • How do you know that your sentences are complete?
