Lower School Update - September 11, 2017

Learning Community Assemblies

We have four Learning Communities in the Lower School that are comprised of classes from Pre-primary to fifth grade. In addition to having buddy classes within the communities, these communities gather as a group four times a year for assemblies. The assemblies allow each class to present learning to their fellow community members and parents. We will have our first assembly this week on Friday starting at 8:15 am in the auditorium with Learning Community A presenting.

The Eagle Way

One of the most important parts of The Eagle Way here at school is for teachers and adults to provide positive reinforcement to our students when we see or hear expected behaviors.  The easiest way we do this, and you can too, is to provide positive verbal praise.  In fact, we are trying to provide positive praise 4 times as often as we provide reminders or redirection.  There are a few simple tips you can follow to make your positive praise at home more effective:  

1.  Make eye contact	3.  Be specific and clear
2.  Smile	4.  Praise immediately

As an example, instead of saying, “Good job”, pause to get your child’s attention and say something like, “Good job getting your shoes on and being ready to go on time today.”  This week, try offering positive praise as often as you can.  If it’s anything like what we are seeing in our classrooms at school, you will be pleased with your child’s actions.

Destination Imagination (Grade 4 & 5)

We would like to offer a special opportunity to 4th and 5th grade students.  There are still a few spots open on the Destination Imagination Teams for this school year. Being a part of a DI team gives children an incredible outlet to foster their creativity and to grow as people, however, it does require an extensive time commitment. We will meet every Tuesday or Thursday (4th grade teams) and Wednesday (5th grade team.) As the tournament draws near in late March, we will likely meet a few more times a week including Fridays and possibly Saturdays.

We also have a special opportunity for parents who are interested in knowing more details about the program or becoming a team manager. Participation in the training is not a commitment to the program! The training will take place on  September 16th, from 9am to 4pm. Sign up here (also use the link to let me know about your interest, but can't make it to September 16th). Please note that signing your child up does not guarantee a spot on a DI team, as we are depended on Team Managers to run the program. September 25-29

September 25-29 will be a regular week in the Lower School (students in Middle and High School will have their Classroom Without Walls week). We will continue to follow our 8 day schedule with each day being the following:

We will return to the whole school 8 day schedule on October 2.
