Grade 4 is Eager to Inspire!

Inspire. Challenge. Succeed.

Every Student... Every Heart... Every Mind... The Eagle Way has arrived at Graded! This week, students have been practicing actions that demonstrate acting safely, giving respect, living responsibly and embracing challenges. Supporting each other every day by celebrating positive behaviours will inspire our Grade 4 community to soar to success!

Building Community. Parents, please take the time to discuss with your child how he/she is practicing The Eagle Way both in and out of the classroom.

Use a see-think-wonder to help guide your conversations and make goals with your child:
  • SEE - What actions do you see that demonstrate the Eagle Way?
  • THINK - What do you think are good strategies to help embrace challenges in your learning?
  • WONDER - I wonder, are you regularly practicing the Eagle Way at Graded? Could you describe specific actions that show your commitment to the Eagle Way? In what ways could we help you stay committed to the Eagle Way?

Curriculum Corner

Literacy. Students will begin the first units in our Reader's and Writer's Workshop. A main focus for both workshop models will focus around characters in narrative stories and narrative writing.

Parents, review the following BrainPop with your child about choosing a just right reading book and use the reading strategies below when reading with your child:

Fiction Reading Genres

Math. Students will begin the first unit of Math that covers concepts related to geometric figures and angles. Students should practice adding and subtracting larger numbers, in addition to practicing their basic multiplication facts, on a regular basis. Please review the Unit 1: Family Letter that provides important background information, vocabulary, do-anytime activities and homework support. Additional resources, including information about all Grade 4 math units, can be found under "Math Links" on the blog.

Students, sharpen your skills by playing the math games and watching the BrainPop videos listed below.

Units of Study. Grade 4 will soon launch our first Social Studies unit, Unique Brazil! Unique Brazil is a close look of our home (or host) country, specifically through the lens of geography. Students will learn about the five themes of geography: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement and Region.

Homework Expectations

Exploring our passions will teach us to be lifelong learners. With this in mind, we feel that time outside of the classroom is important in order to pursue our interests.

The following are our homework expectations for Grade 4:
  • Read 30 minutes
  • Complete one Math worksheet every 2 days
  • Complete unfinished class work
  • Review our Grade 4 blog for additional curricular information and/or to extend the learning at home

Grade 4, practice and develop a growth mindset!

Parents, make your thinking visible at home! Learning to be flexible in our thinking allows us to reflect and make meaningful connections to the world around us; therefore, a culture of thinking for active, healthy and mindful living is created!

Parent Tip: Focus on the learning over the work... Take a moment to ask your child what the purpose of each task was or what does he/she think their teacher wants them to learn. (Ron Ritchhart, 10 Parent ApplicationsProject Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education).

One School. One Community. One Graded.

Grade 4, building a community of readers! In collaboration with our wonderful LS librarian, Dr. Purcell, Grade 4 visited our Book Cafe to preview and select books from a range of fiction genres that they WANT to read!
