Lower School Update - March 27, 2017

Student-Led Conferences
Thank you for attending our second trimester conferences. It is always great to see our students take ownership for their learning. Please remember you may schedule a meeting with your child's teachers at any point in the school year if you would like to discuss academic and/or social/emotional development.

Destination Imagination (DI) - Time to Celebrate!
Congratulations to our Lower School Destination Imagination teams who competed in team challenges this last weekend in Rio! Graded Lower School had 2 teams of 3rd graders compete, each earning 2nd place awards in their divisions. Our 5th grade team earned 1st place and is eligible to attend the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee in May. Way to go, Eagles!

The Destination Imagination Challenge Program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, curiosity and courage through academic Challenges. The Challenges blend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship.

Do You Know Your Child's Account Information?
Starting in third grade, students are set up with Gmail accounts. Access to their email allows students to use the Google Apps platform (including docs, sheets, forms and slides). This is a powerful tool for our students and they are able to produce great work with these applications. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. We are working with our students on our LARK Guidelines (legal, appropriate, responsible, kind) to ensure they understand the importance of being positive digital citizens. We need your assistance with this as well. Please monitor your child's use of these applications at home. We have had several instances of students logging in to each other's accounts, particularly off campus, and sending unkind messages. We will continue to provide education for our students about appropriate technology use, and thank you for your assistance with this important issue.

A Couple of Reminders
- In order to keep our students safe on campus, we ask all students to be supervised by an adult if they are here past 3:15. If students are waiting for a sibling to complete an after school activity, they are welcome to stay in the LS library until 4:00, or the LS office.
- We are reminding students not to use devices when waiting in the car pick up area, and instead encouraging them to socialize with their peers.
