Curriculum Update February 1, 2017

Curriculum Update February 1, 2017

Math:

In Unit 6, children will explore points, line segments, rays, lines, and the relationships among them, along with the geometric shapes that can be built from them. Children will construct angles, polygons, prisms, and pyramids.

Children will also explore similarities and differences among 3-D shapes and regular polyhedrons within the context of a Shapes Museum. They will discover real-life examples of lines that are parallel, or lines that never meet, such as railroad tracks.

Social Studies:
Over the next two months, we will focus on learning about cultures from around the world.  Students will be reading from a variety of nonfiction texts as well as stories and fables from around the world.  Readings, videos, and classroom discussions will revolve around the characteristics that contribute to a culture's identity: art, music, language, religion, sports, daily life, jobs, clothes, transportation, housing, school time, environment, celebrations, holidays, and food.  Students will explore the similarities and differences of a number of different cultures. Understanding these can help us to better appreciate cultures, including our own.

Language Arts:
In conjunction with our Social Studies theme of Culture, students will now turn their attention to fables and folktales. Fables are a type of folktale that teaches a lesson and traditionally have animal characters that have humanistic traits such as wearing clothes or talking. Folktales are stories passed down by the common people of a culture. We will use folktales and fairytales as a basis for understanding story elements with an emphasis on character development. This is a wonderful time for you to share some of the fables and folktales you were told as a child and discuss the tradition of storytelling from your own cultures. In writing, students will be writing original fables to teach a moral and to share with their classmates. To view a collection of popular fables, click on the link below.

Valentine’s Day Kindness Celebration:
February 14th is Valentine’s Day. The 3rd grade is having a Kindness celebration to incorporate our core values and celebrate friendship. Please get in contact with your child’s teacher and room mother if you would like to contribute a snack or drink. This celebration will be on February 14th from 2:15-3:00.
