Holiday Activities - December 15, 2016

Math

When students return we will begin Chapter 6, Geometry. Below are some links to games students are welcome to play over the break to help them familiarize themselves with the content.   Students should also continue practicing adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers with regrouping.  For example 236 + 476 = and 762 - 239 =.  These problems require students to regroup to add or subtract.  Practicing multiplication facts from 1x1 to 10x10 is also highly recommended.  If you would like new Mathletics tasks assigned to your child, please email your child’s teacher.

Reading:

After the holidays we will study fables and folktales. Fables are stories that teach a moral lesson, often have talking animal characters. Folktales are stories passed down by the common people of a culture. Fables are a type of folktale that teaches a lesson. Students may already read fables and folktales that you might have at home. Please try to read everyday!  If you need some book recommendations while on break, here is a great recommended book list.

Language Development:

To further expand your child's language skills, take about 5 minutes to have a conversation in English with your child after they do learning activities (reading, math, etc). Have them explain their thinking, their strategies, and ask any questions they have. English Language Learners generally need practice expressing themselves (speaking and writing) even if they are able to understand what they hear or read. Including academic vocabulary in this conversation with help them develop the language they need to be successful in school.

We wish you a restful and happy holidays.
