This week in the 2nd grade....
Language Arts - This week students learned that readers don't let tricky words derail them; instead, they roll up their sleeves, get down to work, and draw upon all they know to tackle those words. Some of the strategies we discussed were:
- Eagle Eye- Look at the picture. Think, "What is in the picture that starts with the beginning letter?"
- Lips the Fish- Get your mouth ready! Say the beginning sound
- Stretchy Snake- Slowly stretch each letter sound to make the word.
- Chunky Monkey- Break the word into chunks you already know.
Math - We continued practicing our addition and subtraction facts through number stories and we learned about several addition and subtraction shortcuts. Including the +0, -0, +1, -0, the Doubles +1, and the Doubles +2 shortcuts!
Science - This trimester in our earth science unit we will be studying rocks, one of the most important earth materials. This week students worked to observe and compare three types of volcanic rocks: tuff, basalt, and scoria.
Second Step - Being assertive means asking for what you want or need in a calm and firm voice. This week the kids learned that being assertive is a respectful way to get what they want or need.
